Ozempic and similar medications have recently shown a nasty side effect patients may not have been warned about- the paralysis of the nervous system in the gut ( gastroparesis ).

It makes sense that a medication which slows down digestive motility could retard that enough to stop it or slow it beyond tolerable limits.

Symptoms can include:

  • Constipation

  • Nausea, Vomiting

  • Reflux

  • Bloating

  • Indigestion

  • Loss of Appetite

Well, acupuncture has been shown to help gastroparesis. This study from September of 2020, like others I have seen even earlier, shows that acupuncture with transcutaneous electrical stimulation helps move the bowels. The study cites using the stimulation 5 times per week, but in practice I have seen once a week move the bowels reliably in patients taking medications for weight loss, diabetes, and cancer.

The authors use a single point bilaterally, the lower he-sea point on the Stomach channel - ST-36.
